Yves Oppenheim - Galerie Max Hetzler

Galerie Max Hetzler is pleased to present an exhibition with new wall paintings and paintings by the French painter Yves Oppenheim at Oudenarder Straße 16-20 on the occasion of the Gallery Weekend Berlin.

The French painter Yves Oppenheim composes his works with declarative precision. Floating but clearly defined forms in bright colours are combined, overlap each other and are rhythmically transformed in different variations.

Especially for the space at Oudenarder Straße Yves Oppenheim developed an exhibition concept whose most significant element is the wall painting. In some cases the canvases are installed on the wall paintings which become the background and frame for the large scale formats. The composition of the colours and forms are occasionally underlined and repeated in the construction of the wall painting. At the same time the paintings are integrated in the overall picture of the exhibtion and thus form a relief-like installation.

The abstract colourful paintings gain visual depth through the swinging and complex language forms. Superimposed structures create gaps and backgrounds which give the illusion of  three-dimensionality. Some elements of the composition are reminiscent of collages: opaque monochrome planes with sharp edges might be patterned and provided with an irregular, seemingly torn edge, while the application of the paint is even and flat. Black spray is used as a make-believe shadow – Oppenheim plays with perspective within the paintings and in combination with the wall paintings.

This is Yves Oppenheim’s fifth solo show at Galerie Max Hetzler. Yves Oppenheim, born in 1948 in Tananarive (Madagascar), lives and works in Berlin. Since the eighties he participates in international solo and group exhibitions. His work is included in collections such as the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Carré d’Art Nîmes.

Parallel to this exhibition, Galerie Max Hetzler is presenting new paintings by André Butzer in the space at Zimmerstraße 90-91, Berlin-Mitte.
