KONRAD KLAPHECK
Across his oeuvre, Konrad Klapheck (1935–2023) created an exceptional body of paintings, not only within the context of postwar German art. In 1955, while still a student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, he painted a typewriter, inaugurating his ‘Machine Paintings’ which would shape his artistic practice for the next forty-two years. The seemingly banal everyday objects that Klapheck rendered in a precise, realist style comprise an entire genealogy of domestic appliances: faucets, clocks, showerheads, and other devices so familiar that they normally escape our attention. Two motifs in particular – typewriters and sewing machines – occupy a central place in his oeuvre. Between 1955 and 1997, he produced around forty variations of each.
In Klapheck’s work, the ordinary functional object is detached from its original context and transformed into a surreal, symbolically charged image. These machines become metaphors for human relationships, power, sexuality and alienation. Titles such as The Victim, The Seductress, or Triumph of Destruction are an integral part of the paintings. Conceived only after the works were completed, they reveal a further dimension of meaning. Leaving them intentionally open-ended, the artist remarked that explaining a title would be as inappropriate as explaining the punchline of a joke. A decisive shift occurred in Klapheck’s work in 1997, when he began to introduce figures – previously absent in physical form – into his paintings. Whilst his works were never anthropomorphic in any conventional sense, however, they had always been haunted by the human subject, present within his machines as an animating spirit.
‘Through my machine paintings, I was able, without searching, to rediscover the past and come to terms with the problems of life in the present. Beneath every successful painting lay another image, only faintly perceptible, which gave meaning to what was happening on the surface.’
