SABINE MORITZ
In her artistic practice, Cologne-based German artist Sabine Moritz (b. 1969, Quedlinburg) demonstrates a continuous investigation into the complexities of human experience. Across media ranging from intimate drawings to large-format oil paintings, Moritz interweaves elements of abstraction and figuration, drawing from subjects such as history, mythology and poetry.
While her earlier works were mostly figurative, abstraction now suffuses the majority of Moritz’s oeuvre. Often working in series, the artist refers to her nonobjective paintings and drawings as ‘psychological landscapes’. She avoids preliminary sketches, opting instead for a direct, intuitive approach. Paint is applied vigorously, often in thick impasto, to produce rich, tactile surfaces. Rather than striving for compositional harmony, dense layers of brushwork and shifting fields of texture and colour echo the artist’s concern with rhythm and atmosphere. Sustaining an intimate dialogue with the history of painting, Moritz contemplates what it is to paint in an image-saturated world.
