One of Britain's most revered contemporary artists, Glenn Brown works across painting, drawing and sculpture, taking as his source material reproduced imagery from art history and popular culture to create complex and sensuous works of art.

At the core of Brown's practice is the blending of artistic periods, stylistic modes and genres. Transcending time and pictorial conventions, his work disarms common distinctions between good and bad taste, beauty and abjection, heightening the emotive tension present within. In his quotation of traditional subjects and techniques he explores the expressive potential of his materials and expands the limits of representation.

For his exhibition at the Musée Delacroix this October, Brown will present new works, with an emphasis on drawing, as well as a sculpture, inspired by Delacroix, among other artists. Sharing a dedication and enthusiasm for draughtsmanship with Delacroix as a means for investigation and innovation, Brown has been pursuing drawing as an autonomous form of expression since 2013.

With flowing forms and fluid energetic lines, Brown captures the potential and freedom of the medium in his richly layered drawings. Presenting the works in ornate period frames, he creates drawings in response to the colour, design and detail of each, thus adding a further layer of interpretation and inventiveness to the mix of historical references.

Engaging with the ennobled subjects of portraiture and nature, themes also explored by Delacroix, Brown transposes the work of his predecessor into his own complex and unique artistic language.

This exhibition is organised by Galerie Max Hetzler, Paris and Berlin, and will be on show during the FIAC International Art Fair.

Pushing Paper: Contemporary Drawings from 1970 to now (group show)
Prints and Drawings Room, British Museum, London
11 September 2019 – 11 January 2020

Celebrating drawing in its own right, rather than its historic role as preparatory to painting, this display explores how contemporary artists as diverse as Tacita Dean, Richard Deacon, Imran Qureshi and Anish Kapoor have used drawing to examine themes including identity, place and memory. Collaboratively conceived by curators from across the UK, this exhibition follows on from our touring exhibition Lines of thought.

This exhibition will be shown at the British Museum, London before traveling on to Durham, Swansea, Stromness and Barnsley.

Comeback. Art-Historical Renaissances (group show)

Times of upheaval create a desire for orientation in the past. Accordingly, everything historical in our present economy: In the advertising, fashion and film world, the "old" as the authentic in opposition to a mass-produced unity culture in position and often transfigured nostalgic.

Art history is also making a comeback in the visual arts. While in the 1980s the artists cited traditions of the 20th century as "appropriation art", for some years now an orientation towards old masters and art historical techniques has been evident.

Artists not only copy and alienate paintings from bygone eras but also respond more freely and playfully to the "mnemic energies" (Aby Warburg) stored in ancient works. Not infrequently, they try to visualize the collective heritage through performative strategies as well as through photographic and cinematic media for the present.
