From 30 September to 28 November, the Long Museum (West Bund) is pleased to present Beatriz Milhazes: Ballet em Diagonais, the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes’s first solo museum exhibition in China.

The exhibition features recent paintings, collages and sculptures, alongside a site-specific installation on the window of the Long Museum. Using transparent vinyl, Milhazes has created a collage applied directly to the glass. Similar to a stained-glass window, in daylight the work casts a dazzling array of coloured shapes across the museum’s interior space.

The work of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes is characterised by vibrant colour, optical play and energetic visual rhythms. Working in a wide range of mediums, Milhazes’ unique form of abstraction fuses a diverse array of shapes, images, patterns and colours to make densely layered and complex works which combine elements from the natural world, her native Brazilian culture as well as a long tradition of European abstraction.

Beatriz Milhazes: Ballet em Diagonais provides a comprehensive overview of Milhazes’ expansive practice. For her paintings, Milhazes uses a decal technique whereby shapes are painted onto sheets of plastic which, when dry, are then peeled off and transferred to the canvas. This method of production allows the artist to work with a smooth surface which nonetheless reveals the process of its own construction. At times the paint remains stuck to the plastic and rips, and these torn and exposed elements introduce points of erosion which give the impression that the final artwork is the result of multiple layers of time collapsed into a single image.

In her collages Milhazes uses a wide range of materials, including found papers, confectionary wrappers, designer labels with specially printed serigraphic paper and fragments of her own screen-prints. This wide variety of source material is the means by which Milhazes explores form and colour, concerns that are also addressed in the hanging sculptures composed of colourful objects strung on fine vertical threads, cascading down from ceiling to floor and responding to the movement of the audience.

For the 24th Safety Curtain, the jury (Daniel Birnbaum, Bice Curiger and Hans-Ulrich Obrist) selected the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, who is the first Latin American artist of the project. Her work Pink Sunshine can be seen by the audience from 21 October 2021 until the end of June 2022 before the start of the performances, during the intermissions and at the end of the performances.

Safety Curtain is an exhibition series conceived by museum in progress in cooperation with the Vienna State Opera that has been transforming the safety curtain of the main stage into an exhibition space for contemporary art since 1998. The large-format pictures (176 square metres) are fixed on the safety curtain with magnets.

Beatriz Milhazes is one of the six leading contemporary artists invited by Louis Vuitton to reinterpret the iconic Capucines bag.

The artist created a bag that takes after her vibrant and hypnotic paintings inspired by the popular art of her native country. Translating the refined geometric composition of an original artwork onto the bag relied on expert and innovative marquetry techniques. A kaleidoscope of textures and colors come together with eighteen different types of leather, further enhanced by gold leaf detailing, and the playful touch of a gel peace sign.

New artwork unveiled at Inujima "Art House Project"

Yellow Flower Dream, a work by Beatriz Milhazes has opened in Japan on November 1st, 2018, at Inujima Island for the "Art House Project - A-Art House”, and also will be joining Setouchi Triennale 2019 starting from April 26th, 2019.  

Based on the artist's perception of the architecture of A-Art House as a "sculpture uniting the surrounding community and nature", this work represents, through the use of colors overflowing with energy, a virtual landscape depicting the vitality of the geometry and daily life unfolding in Inujima's nature.

Inujima Art House Project was launched with the objective of inspiring the local community of Inujima, allowing them to experience the beautiful landscapes of everyday life and the familiar natural environments that extend beyond the artworks. This project was developed by artistic director Yuko Hasegawa and architect Kazuyo Sejima for the village on Inujima.

The Inujima “Art House Project” is a part of art-related activities, Benesse Art Site Naoshima, conducted by Benesse Holdings, Inc. and Fukutake Foundation on the islands of Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima to create significant spaces in resonance with the pristine nature of the Seto Inland Sea region.
