Anthony Caro: The Inspiration of Architecture (solo show)

Anthony Caro (1924–2013) is the subject of Pitzhanger’s spring exhibition, which opened on what would have been the artist’s 99th birthday. The exhibition focuses on the resurgence and development of architectural themes within Caro’s sculpture, comprising 16 key works created between 1983–2013. The pieces explore contained space and its relation to the human figure; architectural features such as passages, doors and steps in the form of sculpture; the use of specific materials – notably Caro’s use of coloured Perspex, which echoes Sir John Soane’s use of stained glass at Pitzhanger Manor, as well as steel, wood, concrete, stoneware and brass; and the relationship between exterior and interior areas.

On 27 May, The Anthony Caro Centre, London, will host its first monthly opening of Sir Anthony Caro’s former studio in Camden. Visitors will have the chance to explore the gallery and its exciting display of Caro’s works from the 1960s onwards.

Color Fields (group exhibition)

Four sculptures by British artist Sir Anthony Caro are included in a major presentation of Color Field works from the collection of Audrey and David Mirvish at the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art in Sakura City, Japan. The exhibition brings together works by noteworthy artists from the Mirvish collection, providing a comprehensive overview of the American movement hailing from the 1950s and 1960s. Demonstrating the vibrancy of the movement through the intensely coloured canvases of Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler, the exhibtion highlights the vividity of Caro's painted steel sculputres from the 1960s, with the of the works Crossing, 1965, Red Splash, 1966, Prima Luce, 1966, and Trefoil, 1968 (pictured above).
