Janaina Tschäpe’s major exhibition Conversations with the Sea at Hastings Contemporary marks her first institutional solo presentation in the UK. Captivated by the notion of the sea as a gateway to mystical realms, Tschäpe has created a new series of paintings that respond directly to her experience of visiting Hastings during a wet, stormy November. The artist's abstract landscapes offer forays into the geological state of the psyche, blending geographical, astronomical and intimately humane concerns.

Taking its title from a line in Charles Baudelaire’s poem Man and the Sea, the exhibition considers the idea of the sea as a mirror, mediating on human existence and the power of nature.
