KAREL APPEL
Beach Life, 1957 (permanent collection)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
We are delighted to announce that Karel Appel’s painting Beach Life, 1957, is now part of the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Painted on Long Island during Appel's first stay in New York, Beach Life reflects the artist's encounter with his new environment and the energy of the New York School. On the invitation of Lee Krasner, Appel spent a few days at the studio of Jackson Pollock, who had died the previous year, before moving to a nearby studio space arranged by Martha Jackson. It was here that Beach Life was painted.
