Katharina Grosse’s solo institutional exhibition Black Bed will open at MUNCH, Oslo, this autumn. The exhibition title is taken from a new installation that reimagines one of Grosse’s seminal pieces, Das Bett, 2004, in which the artist spray-painted her bedroom in Düsseldorf, along with her furniture, clothes and belongings, destroying them in the process of creating the work.

Grosse describes Black Bed as connecting to the emotional and psychological themes of life and death in the work of Edvard Munch. In preparation for this exhibition, Grosse will spend time working in Munch’s studio at Ekely in Oslo, creating new works that add another dimension to the dialogue between the two artists.

Matthew Barney presents ZONE DEFENSE: Old Snowmass Parallax as part of Aspen Art Museum’s AIR Festival. This new large-scale sculpture extends Barney's ongoing investigation into the interplay between physical endurance, mythology and material transformation. Figured like a drawing in space, the work responds to TACTICAL parallax, Barney’s site-specific performance for AIR 2025. Tickets are required for the public viewing of ZONE DEFENSE, which will take place on Friday, 31 July.

Katharina Grosse’s work is the subject of a solo exhibition at La Llotja de Palma. For Arrels, Grosse creates a site-specific intervention within one of Palma’s most significant historical buildings. Transforming La Llotja into an active field of experience, Grosse uses colour to unify disparate elements, alter perception and generate a multisensory immersion in space. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Government of the Balearic Islands and Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma.

Katharina Grosse presents Fünfunddreißig Jahre Schönheit, 2026, the artist’s third edition made in collaboration with TEXTE ZUR KUNST. Individually painted using the artist’s celebrated ‘spraying’ technique, the edition marks the magazine’s 35th anniversary. Grosse has taken back issues of the magazine as substrates for 35 unique and characteristically colorful paintings. From an edition of 35 + 5 AP, each piece is unique.

Thomas Struth’s photographs are included in the group exhibition Passants parmi les Pierres at fjk3 – Contemporary Art Space, Vienna. Curated by German photographer Thomas Demand, the exhibition is dedicated to representations of the relationship between the individual, architecture and public space, featuring photographs and films with text contributions by Austrian author Clemens J. Thomas Struth’s work features in the group exhibition Civilization – Our Life in Focus at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich. Bringing together works by approximately 100 celebrated photographers, the exhibtion presents a multilayered portrait of contemporary society, drawing on both artistic and documentary approaches to the medium. Themes of family, leisure, work, and consumption are set against images of alienation, crime, environmental degradation, social fragmentation, and war. Collectively, these photographs offer a portrait of civilisation that is at once familiar and unsettling, articulated through the visual language of photography.

SECONDARY is a five-channel video installation by Matthew Barney, performed in the artist’s Long Island City studio in 2023, then in London, Paris, and Los Angeles in 2024. The plot revolves around an accident that occurred during a football game in 1978, when Oakland Raiders’ Jack Tatum delivered an open field hit on Darryl Stingley, a wide receiver for the New England Patriots. Stingley was left paralysed. The tragic event remained seared in the minds of American fans, including Barney himself, a youth-league quarterback at the time.

Through allusion to American sports culture, SECONDARY explores the complex intersection of violence, its representation, and its celebration. It reimagines the game through a unique movement vocabulary. The result is a physical study that focuses on every element of the game, from drills and pre-game rituals to moments of impact and their slow-motion replays.

Volume 1 explores SECONDARY in depth, with essays by leading contemporary voices. Volume 2 maps the life of Barney’s former Long Island City studio, where SECONDARY premiered to the public.

We congratulate Thomas Struth on being awarded the Soane Honors Award for Photography.

Katharina Grosse’s monumental artwork bLINK – a pink boulder the size of a three-storey building – emerges from the railway bridge of the West Link in Gothenburg. Through bLINK, Grosse invites the viewer to imagine a giant spotlight directing a pink light beam towards the ground. All the surfaces that are hit by the fictitious cone of light are engulfed in pink: the railway bridge, trusses, pavement, footpath and cycle lane. The project was commissioned by Public Art Agency Sweden and the Swedish Transportation Administration, as part of the artistic design of the West Link.

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart presents a solo exhibition focusing on the three-dimensional work of Katharina Grosse. Celebrated for her unique, spatial paintings, this exhibition offers the first comprehensive overview to include her lesser known body of plastic and sculptural work, shedding light on the beginnings of the internationally renowned painter’s career – from the 1980s to the present day.

From the artist’s early works of the 1980s through to the latest canvases, sculptures and in-situ works, The Sprayed Dear showcases Grosse’s diverse oeuvre and the inexhaustible range of materials on which she has painted, allowing her to redefine the possibilities of art.

Katharina Grosse has unveiled her first ever work in glass, Ein Glas Wasser, bitte (A Glass of Water, Please), developed especially for the Museum Reinhard Ernst in Wiesbaden. Comprising a large stained-glass wall weighing several tonnes, the work harnesses the complementary colours blue and orange to examine ‘how these colours mix, cross, repel, disturb and enrich each other in a watery state.’ As the artist states: ‘This energy has a transformational power that can inspire and excite all who are in front of or behind the glass wall. It shows that the world is in flux.’

Thomas Struth’s photograph Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh, Windsor Castle 2011, 2011, will be on view as part of the exhibition Inspiring People. Transforming the National Portrait Gallery, the Inspiring People project comprises a complete re-presentation of the Collection, combined with a significant refurbishment of the building, the creation of public spaces, a more welcoming visitor entrance and public forecourt, and a new Learning centre. The Gallery reopens to the public on 22 June 2023.

Archive Matrix Assembly: The Photography of Thomas Struth 1978–2018 presents the first comprehensive, systematic theory of Thomas Struth’s main body of photographic work from its beginnings in the late 1970s until his most recent work in 2018. The book presents a unique, evolutionary understanding of the work, proposing that it has established three stages of production: archive, matrix, and assembly. Together the three stages form a developmental system that characterizes the individual photographs, their relation to their subject matter, and how they form larger, significant collections of images. The book project accomplishes three main goals: it develops a comprehensive critical reading of the work, it serves as a monograph of the artist, and it provides an extensive analysis of the photographs at all stages, including the less discussed, more recent photography, which is placed on par with the earlier work for which Struth first became internationally renowned.
