The Morgan Library and Museum will celebrate Walton Ford’s gift of sixty-three studies, including detailed renderings made from observations in zoos and museums of natural history, quick compositional sketches, and small watercolours in which he establishes his colour scheme. The exhibition also features a selection of animal drawings by earlier artists selected by Ford from the Morgan’s collection, from Peter Paul Rubens and Maria Sibylla Merian to Eugène Delacroix.

Walton Ford’s first solo exhibition in Italy, Lion of God, opens at Ateneo Veneto on 17 April, during La Biennale di Venezia’s preview week. The site-specific exhibition presents a new body of work conceived in response to the collection of the historical Venetian institution. A series of monumental watercolour paintings will explore the historical, biological and environmental resonance of the subjects of the library’s collection, particularly the figure of the lion in Tintoretto’s Apparizione della Vergine a San Girolamo (The Apparition of the Virgin to St. Jerome), c. 1580.

The presentation will span two rooms in the Ateneo – the Aula Magna on the ground floor, and the Sala Tommaseo hall where Tintoretto’s work will be moved into public view for the exhibition’s duration.
