Galerie Max Hetzler is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by German artist Ulrich Lamsfuß.
Found images from a variety of media – ranging from National Geographic to fashion magazines to film and art history – provide the basis for the oil paintings of Berlin-based artist Ulrich Lamsfuß.
In the simplest terms, Lamsfuß' process is about selecting photographic images and painting them. The artist seems to be interested in the transformation of our contemporary society, strongly influenced by all sorts of media, into a painted hyperreality.
The original photograph for Jahcoozi was shot by the artist in his studio and painted in large format after having arranged a surreal scene with the three protagonists of the band Jahcoozi from Berlin. Every single image that Lamsfuß chooses to recreate in oil is significant as a representation of our contemporary environment.
His studio can be seen as a kind of image factory and his ongoing process is about the accumulation of images and the subsequent production of a whole field.
Lamsfuß often creates different versions of the same painting. Hardly distinguishable from one another are the three portraits of a girl with fur cap included in the show. Lamsfuß' beautiful interpretation of Paradise 7 by Thomas Struth shows us quite plainly how the act of reproduction can further blur the line between photography and painting and how a new work of art can be created.
Ulrich Lamsfuß, born in 1971 in Bonn, lives and works in Berlin.
This is his third solo show at Galerie Max Hetzler.
